Lungbild is a term used in German-speaking medical contexts to describe an image of the lungs produced by radiologic methods. It denotes the visual representation of lung anatomy and pathology, including chest radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans. In clinical use, the lungbild is interpreted by radiologists in conjunction with clinical information.

Common modalities include chest radiography, typically obtained in anterior-posterior or posterior-anterior views with optional lateral projections. Chest X-rays provide a broad overview of lung parenchyma, airways, pleura, and cardiac size, and are frequently used to diagnose pneumonia, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, edema, and traumatic injury. Computed tomography offers higher resolution and three-dimensional detail, enabling detection of small nodules, interstitial changes, emphysema, pulmonary emboli, and complex trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging has a more limited role in routine practice but can be used in certain pediatric or specialty cases. Lung ultrasound is valuable for assessing pleural effusions and pneumothorax and for procedural guidance.

Interpretation focuses on the pattern, location, and extent of abnormalities, comparing with prior images and correlating with symptoms. Radiologic signs such as consolidation, ground-glass opacity, nodules, cavitation, reticulation, and pleural or mediastinal findings guide differential diagnosis. The lungbild informs clinical decisions, including infection management, cancer staging, and evaluation of chronic lung diseases.

Limitations of imaging include exposure to ionizing radiation with X-ray and CT, and limited sensitivity for certain conditions. MRI avoids ionizing radiation but is less accessible for lung imaging due to low proton density and motion. Safe use requires appropriate patient selection, contrast considerations, and adherence to local reporting standards. Imaging findings are integrated with history, examination, and laboratory data to arrive at a diagnosis.
