Lungalever is a term used in speculative design and science fiction to refer to a mechanical lever or linkage integrated with the respiratory system to augment or regulate breathing. The concept envisions a compact actuator-based device able to assist inhalation or exhalation by applying controlled torque to the chest wall or to an external harness that supports the thorax.

Etymology: The name is a portmanteau of lung and lever, reflecting its proposed function as a lever-like mechanism for the lungs.

Design and operation: Lungalevers may be internal implantables or external devices connected via a wearable interface. They would use sensors to monitor breathing and lung pressure, and actuators (electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic) to synchronize assistance with the user’s natural respiration. Designers emphasize modularity, safety interlocks, and controllable levels of support to minimize interference with spontaneous breathing.
