Luminalers are a fictional designation used in speculative fiction to refer to inhabitants of, or travelers through, luminal spaces—the imagined interdimensional corridors that connect disparate worlds. In many narratives, luminalers are defined by their ability to navigate or inhabit a liminal realm that lies between conventional realities, and by a cultural emphasis on exchange, memory, and cross‑world mediation.

Etymology and origins: The term combines luminal, from Latin lumen meaning light, with the agent noun suffix -er. The concept emerged in late 20th-century science fiction and has since appeared in several shared‑universe settings, where luminal spaces may be described as conduits, gateways, or a distinct plane of existence.

Biology and society: Depictions vary. Some luminalers are biological beings who metabolize luminal energy and exhibit enhanced perception or rapid healing when near luminal nodes; others are humans or alien populations augmented by luminal implants or symbioses. Socially, luminaler communities often organize around gateway networks, memory archives, or sovereign corridors. Ethical issues—sovereignty, consent, and interference with other realities—are common plot tensions. Technology: travel relies on gateways, lattice keys, or lightpaths that stabilize the luminal interface.

In media and scholarship: luminalers are used to explore themes of migration, borders, and cultural exchange, as well as questions about identity in multidimensional settings.
