Luftväxlingsbehandlare, often translated as air handling unit (AHU) in English, is a component of an HVAC system responsible for conditioning and circulating air. Its primary function is to control the temperature, humidity, and purity of the air supplied to a building or a specific zone. An AHU typically contains several key components, including fans to move air, heating and cooling coils to adjust air temperature, filters to remove particulates, and sometimes humidifiers or dehumidifiers to manage moisture levels.

The operation of an AHU involves drawing in fresh outdoor air and recirculating indoor air. These two air streams are mixed in specific proportions to meet ventilation requirements and maintain desired indoor air quality. The mixed air then passes through the various conditioning stages within the AHU. For example, it might be heated by a hot water coil or electric heater, or cooled by a chilled water coil or direct expansion refrigeration system. Filtration is a critical step to remove dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants, which is essential for occupant health and comfort.

AHUs are commonly found in commercial buildings, hospitals, schools, and other large structures where centralized climate control is necessary. They can be designed in various configurations, from simple units to complex systems with multiple zones and advanced control capabilities. The efficient operation of an AHU is crucial for energy conservation within a building, as it directly impacts heating and cooling loads.
