The projectile most commonly used in luftgewehren is the pellet, which comes in various shapes and sizes, such as diabolo, wadcutter, and slug. BBs, small spherical projectiles, are also used, particularly in lower-powered models. The air or gas is typically stored in a cylinder or reservoir, which is then released to push the projectile down the barrel.

There are several common types of luftgewehren based on their power source. Spring-piston rifles use a spring that is cocked by a lever or by breaking the barrel. When released, the spring drives a piston, compressing air that then expels the pellet. Pneumatic rifles use a pump to build up air pressure, either manually or through an integrated pump. Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) rifles store a large volume of compressed air in a reservoir, allowing for multiple shots before needing to be refilled.

Luftgewehren are used for a variety of purposes, including sport shooting, target practice, pest control in some regions, and recreational shooting. Safety precautions are important when handling any air rifle, as even low-powered models can cause injury. Regulations regarding ownership and use vary significantly by country and region.
