Luftcylinder, literally “air cylinder” in German, is a pneumatic actuator that uses compressed air to produce linear motion. It is a fundamental element in many automation systems, offering fast response, simple control, and clean operation in environments where electric actuators are impractical.

Construction and variants: A luftcylinder typically comprises a cylinder barrel, a piston and rod, end caps, seals, and air ports. It may be single-acting (air extends with a spring return) or double-acting (air drives both directions). Mounting options include tie-rod, flange, and clevis. ISO standards (such as ISO 15552) cover standard bore sizes from 6 to 320 mm and common stroke lengths.

Operation and materials: Compressed air is directed to the appropriate port to move the piston. Double-acting cylinders use air on opposite sides; single-acting cylinders use spring return. Cylinders are usually aluminum or stainless steel; cushions reduce impact. Proper maintenance requires clean, dry air and periodic inspection of seals and fittings.
