Luftblockade refers to a blockade conducted primarily through air power to interrupt the movement of goods, people, and war materiel across borders or within a theater of operations. The strategy aims to degrade the opponent's war economy and ability to sustain military effort by denying imports, exports, and transport capacity, without relying solely on naval or ground blockade measures.

Operationally, a luftblockade relies on establishing air superiority, then using strategic bombing, air interdiction, and attacks on ports, rail hubs, shipping, fuel depots, and production facilities to disrupt critical supply chains. It may be supported by reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and, where feasible, airlift or ground-based denial of routes. The approach is distinct from an airlift, which seeks to supply a besieged area, and from a conventional naval blockade, which uses ships and blockades at sea.

Historical experience, especially during the Second World War, shows that air campaigns can impose significant economic and logistical strain on an adversary and may contribute to the pressure for political outcomes. However, complete success is controversial; air blockades often fail to fully seal an economy due to adaptation, substitutions, civilian harm, and the resilience of supply networks.

Today the concept remains part of air power doctrine in some contexts, but its use is restricted by international law and humanitarian concerns. Critics emphasize that indiscriminate or widespread bombing can cause disproportionate civilian suffering and may be counterproductive.
