Luchtwegdekking refers to the complete or partial obstruction of the airway, the passage through which air travels to and from the lungs. This blockage can occur at various levels, from the nasal passages and mouth to the larynx, trachea, bronchi, and even smaller airways. Causes of luchtwegdekking are diverse and can range from external factors to internal physiological issues.

Common external causes include foreign body aspiration, such as food particles or small objects, particularly in children. External compression from enlarged lymph nodes, tumors, or trauma to the neck can also impede airflow. Internally, swelling of the airway tissues due to allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), infections (like epiglottitis or croup), or trauma can lead to significant obstruction. In certain medical conditions, such as severe asthma attacks or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, bronchospasm and excessive mucus production can narrow the airways, effectively causing luchtwegdekking.

The consequences of luchtwegdekking depend on its severity and duration. Mild obstruction may cause symptoms like noisy breathing (stridor or wheezing), coughing, and shortness of breath. Severe or complete obstruction is a life-threatening emergency, leading rapidly to hypoxia (lack of oxygen), brain damage, and potentially death if not relieved promptly. Management focuses on identifying and removing the obstruction or opening the airway through maneuvers, intubation, or other medical interventions.
