The goal is to keep global temperature rise below the threshold suggested by the Paris Agreement, ideally limiting increases to 1.5 °C above pre‑industrial levels.

Key drivers of global warming are the combustion of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrial processes, and agricultural practices that emit carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Lowering global warming involves both reducing these emissions and enhancing carbon sinks. Strategies include transitioning to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power; improving energy efficiency in buildings, transportation, and industry; adopting low‑carbon agricultural techniques; and protecting and expanding forests, wetlands, and other natural ecosystems that sequester carbon.

Technological approaches also play a significant role. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) captures CO₂ from point sources and can store it underground or in geological formations. Direct air capture devices pull CO₂ directly from ambient air, potentially enabling negative emissions when the captured carbon is removed from the atmosphere. Greenhouse gas removal through afforestation, reforestation, soil carbon enhancement, and ocean fertilization are other methods explored.

Internationally, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provides a platform for countries to submit Nationally Determined Contributions, outlining specific commitments to lower emissions.
