Lowdefect is a term used to describe products, processes, or systems engineered or managed to minimize defects and defect-related risk. In practice, it refers to an orientation toward defect prevention over defect correction, with the aim of achieving consistently high quality and reliability across production runs and life-cycle stages.

Applications span manufacturing, software development, electronics, and medical devices. Common approaches include design-for-quality and poka-yoke (mistake-proofing), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), statistical process control (SPC), and Six Sigma methodologies. Teams often pursue lowdefect targets by early-stage design reviews, automated testing, continuous integration, and robust change management.

Measurements focus on defect rates and yield. Typical metrics include first-pass yield, defect density, parts per million (PPM) defective, and defect leakage after release. Quality data is analyzed to identify root causes and prevent recurrence through corrective and preventive actions.

Benefits of a low-defect orientation include lower rework costs, higher customer satisfaction, improved product reliability, and reduced warranty exposure. Challenges include balancing speed and cost, accurately measuring rare defects, and sustaining discipline across supply chains and software ecosystems.
