Longaxis refers to the longest dimension through an object, commonly described as the major axis of a shape. When the term is written as one word, it is often seen in technical contexts or software names, but in standard usage it is usually written as “long axis.”

In geometry, the long axis is the major axis of an ellipse or the longest principal axis of an ellipsoid. For an ellipse, the long axis is the line that passes through the center and connects the two farthest points on the boundary; its length is 2a, where a is the semi-major axis. The short axis, or minor axis, is perpendicular to the long axis and has length 2b, with b ≤ a. In ellipsoids, the long axis is the axis corresponding to the greatest radius among the three principal axes.

In biology and medical imaging, the long axis describes the longitudinal direction of an elongated structure, such as a rod-shaped cell, a bone, or a plant stem. Measurements and imaging planes are often defined relative to the long axis, and the term “long-axis view” denotes an orientation aligned with that axis.

In computation and vision, the long axis can be estimated by fitting a line to a shape’s geometry or by identifying the first principal component of the shape’s coordinate set, thereby capturing the direction of greatest variance and elongation.
