Lokaldimning, also known as local dimming, is a display technology used in LCD screens to improve contrast and black levels. It works by dividing the backlight of the LCD into zones. Each zone can be individually controlled to dim or brighten, allowing for deeper blacks in dark areas of the image and brighter whites in light areas. This creates a more dynamic range and a more impactful picture compared to conventional LCDs where the entire backlight is illuminated uniformly.

The effectiveness of local dimming depends on the number of zones. More zones generally lead to better control and a more precise dimming effect. However, even with a high number of zones, some blooming or haloing around bright objects on dark backgrounds can occur, as the dimming is not pixel-by-pixel. Despite this limitation, local dimming significantly enhances the viewing experience for movies, games, and other visual content by reducing the "greyish" blacks often seen on standard LCDs. It is a feature found in many mid-range to high-end televisions and monitors.
