Locationdepending is a term used in various disciplines to describe processes, datasets, or models whose relevant quantities change with spatial position. It contrasts with location-invariant frameworks in which parameters are assumed constant across space. The concept is important wherever space is a factor in behavior, measurement, or outcome.

In physics and engineering, location-dependence appears in potential energy fields, material properties that vary with position (for example, position-dependent mass or dopant concentration in semiconductors), and systems with nonuniform media. In geosciences and ecology, environmental variables such as temperature, precipitation, or habitat suitability are modeled as functions of geographic location, leading to spatially varying risk, abundance, or flux.

In computer science and data science, location dependence can refer to datasets whose attributes depend on spatial coordinates, or to algorithms whose behavior changes with location, such as location-based services, geofenced rules, or routing that accounts for geographic variability. In statistics, location parameters act as shifts in distributions, and location dependence can describe phenomena where descriptive location (spatial coordinates) influences the distribution of observations.

Modeling approaches include spatial statistics (variograms, kriging), partial differential equations with location-dependent coefficients, and GIS-based region-specific parameterization. Common challenges include data sparsity, spatial autocorrelation, nonstationarity, and privacy concerns when location data are collected.
