Ljud is the term for sound in several Scandinavian languages, most commonly Swedish and Norwegian. In Swedish, ljud refers to a sound or noise, and its genitive singular form is ljuds, used to indicate possession as in “ljudets karaktär” (the sound’s character). The word also appears in compounds such as ljudnivå (sound level) and ljudkvalitet (sound quality). Beyond its linguistic usage, ljud denotes the physical phenomenon of sound in physics and everyday life.

Sound is produced by vibrating objects that create pressure fluctuations in a surrounding medium, typically air. These fluctuations propagate as waves and can be characterized by frequency (measured in hertz, Hz), which relates to pitch; amplitude, which relates to loudness; and timbre, which distinguishes different sounds with the same pitch and loudness. The speed of sound depends on the medium and conditions such as temperature and pressure; in air at room temperature it is about 343 meters per second.

Perception of sound involves psychoacoustics, the study of how humans interpret auditory signals. Humans generally hear from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with sensitivity varying by frequency and individual factors. Sound measurement commonly uses decibels (dB) to express sound pressure level, and various scales and filters to assess loudness, pitch, and quality. Sound plays a central role in communication, music, environmental ambience, and technology, while excessive or unwanted sound is addressed through the field of acoustics and noise control.
