Lixiviados, also known as leachate, are liquids that have passed through a material, dissolving or carrying soluble constituents. In the context of waste management, lixiviados are primarily associated with landfills. They are formed when rainwater, groundwater, or other liquids infiltrate decomposing waste. As these liquids percolate through the waste, they extract dissolved organic and inorganic compounds, heavy metals, and other pollutants.

The composition of lixiviados varies greatly depending on the type of waste, its age, and the environmental conditions. Young landfills with high organic content tend to produce lixiviados that are rich in biodegradable organic matter, leading to high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Older landfills may produce lixiviados with a higher concentration of recalcitrant organic compounds and inorganic salts.

Lixiviados pose a significant environmental threat if not properly managed. They can contaminate soil and groundwater, rendering them unsuitable for drinking or agricultural use. The release of lixiviados into surface water bodies can also harm aquatic ecosystems due to increased nutrient levels, toxicity, and oxygen depletion. Therefore, modern landfills are designed with sophisticated systems to collect and treat lixiviados. These systems typically include liners to prevent leakage, drainage layers to collect the liquid, and collection pipes that convey the lixiviados to a treatment facility. Treatment processes can involve physical, chemical, and biological methods to remove pollutants before the treated water is discharged or recycled.
