Linefartyg is a term of Swedish origin that translates to "line ship" or "ship of the line." Historically, it referred to a type of large, multi-decked sailing warship that was designed to be placed in the center of a naval battle line. These vessels were heavily armed with cannon along their broadsides, and their primary role was to engage enemy ships of similar size in a pitched battle. The concept of the ship of the line emerged in the late 17th century and dominated naval warfare for nearly two centuries.

The development of the linefartyg was a significant technological and tactical advancement. Their construction was robust, designed to withstand the rigors of battle and the stresses of carrying numerous heavy guns. The typical linefartyg would have two or three gun decks, with the number of cannons ranging from fifty to over a hundred.
