Liljat, or lilies, are flowering plants in the genus Lilium, within the family Liliaceae. They are hardy, perennial bulbous herbs native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and are widely cultivated for their large, showy blossoms.

Lilies typically produce a tall, unbranched stem with lance-shaped leaves. The flowers are usually borne at the tip of the stem and have six petal-like tepals, often arranged in a trumpet- or cup-shaped form. Colors range from white and yellow to orange, pink, and red, and many varieties are fragrant.

There are about 95 wild species and thousands of cultivated varieties. True lilies are distinct from daylilies of the genus Hemerocallis. Common cultivated groups include Asiatic hybrids, Oriental hybrids, and trumpet lilies (Longiflorum), as well as numerous interspecific hybrids. Lilies are grown from bulbs and spread by bulb division or seed; they prefer well-drained, fertile soil and a sunny to lightly shaded site.

Planting depth is typically 10–15 cm; water regularly during the growing season but avoid waterlogging; feed lightly in spring. They are susceptible to pests such as lily beetles and to diseases such as botrytis in damp conditions; staking may be needed for tall varieties, and most benefit from mulch and winter protection in cold climates.

Lilies are valued as ornamental garden plants and cut flowers. In cultural symbolism they are associated with purity and renewal in many traditions, and the Easter lily is closely linked to Christian symbolism. All parts of lilies are toxic to cats; ingestion can cause acute kidney injury, so plants should be kept away from pets.
