Likströmsmaskinen, often translated as the direct current machine, refers to an electrical machine that operates using direct current (DC). This encompasses a range of devices, most notably DC generators and DC motors. A DC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy in the form of direct current. This is typically achieved through the interaction of a magnetic field and a rotating conductor, with a commutator playing a crucial role in rectifying the alternating current produced within the rotor into a direct current output.

Conversely, a DC motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. It utilizes the principle that a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force.
