Liittolaisuus on a Finnish term that describes a policy or tendency to form and maintain alliances with other states for mutual security, political influence, or economic cooperation. Alliances can be formal, such as binding defense treaties, or informal, such as long‑term security partnerships and political commitments. The central idea is that states coordinate their foreign and security policy to deter aggression and strengthen their position, often in response to perceived threats.

In international relations, liittolaisuus is one of several strategic options for managing security. It is analyzed alongside neutrality, non‑alignment, and collective security mechanisms. A key logic is that credible commitments by allies reduce the probability of attack and shift the balance of power in a favorable direction. At the same time, forming alliances can entail costs, including loss of autonomy, obligations to intervene, or entrapment in conflicts not of a state's own choosing.
