Liitostransistori, or field-effect transistors (FETs) in English, are a type of electronic component used to amplify or switch electronic signals and electrical power. They are a fundamental building block of modern electronic devices, including computers, smartphones, and televisions. Unlike bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), which rely on both electron and hole current flow, FETs control current through an electric field applied to an insulated gate terminal.

The most common type of FET is the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET), which dominates modern integrated circuits due to its efficiency and scalability. MOSFETs consist of three terminals: the source, drain, and gate. The gate terminal modulates the conductivity between the source and drain, allowing precise control of current flow. This property makes MOSFETs highly suitable for digital logic circuits, where they function as switches, and analog circuits, where they serve as amplifiers.

Liitostransistorit operate in different modes depending on the voltage applied to the gate. In enhancement-mode MOSFETs, current flows only when a sufficient positive (for n-channel) or negative (for p-channel) voltage is applied to the gate. Depletion-mode MOSFETs, on the other hand, conduct current even without a gate voltage, but the current decreases when a voltage is applied. This dual-mode operation provides flexibility in circuit design.

One of the key advantages of FETs, particularly MOSFETs, is their low power consumption and high switching speeds, which are critical for high-performance and energy-efficient electronics. They are also less prone to thermal runaway compared to BJTs, making them more reliable in many applications. The continuous miniaturization of MOSFETs, following Moore’s Law, has enabled the development of increasingly complex and powerful integrated circuits, driving advancements in technology.
