It occurs when fluid accumulates in the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum. This fluid buildup can impair hearing and, in some cases, lead to developmental delays in speech and language.

The exact cause of liimikõrv is not always clear, but it is often associated with upper respiratory infections or allergies. These conditions can cause the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, to swell and become blocked. This blockage prevents proper drainage of fluid from the middle ear, leading to its accumulation.

Symptoms of liimikõrv can vary. In many children, the condition is painless, and the main sign is hearing loss. This may manifest as a child not responding when called, turning up the volume on electronic devices, or having difficulty understanding speech. Some children may also experience ear discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the ear.

Diagnosis of liimikõrv is typically made by a healthcare professional through a physical examination, including the use of an otoscope to visualize the eardrum. Tympanometry, a test that measures the eardrum's movement and middle ear pressure, is also commonly used.

Treatment approaches for liimikõrv depend on the severity and duration of the condition, as well as the child's age and symptoms. In many cases, the fluid will resolve on its own within a few weeks or months. If symptoms persist or are significant, interventions such as watchful waiting, medication to reduce inflammation, or in some instances, surgical placement of ventilation tubes (grommets) in the eardrum may be considered.
