Lihtsamates is a genus of freshwater aquatic plants that forms thin, flat mats on or just below the water surface. Members of the genus have simple, leaf-like blades and short rooting structures, enabling rapid vegetative spread in suitable conditions. The morphology is considered comparatively austere relative to other aquatic macrophytes, which contributes to its name in some classifications.

Taxonomy and description are subject to revision as molecular studies clarify relationships among aquatic plants. In many recent treatments, Lihtsamates is placed in the family Lihtsamaceae, while some authorities note relationships to duckweed- or pondweed–like groups and advocate alternate placements. The genus currently includes several described species, with Lihtsamates alba, Lihtsamates lutea, and Lihtsamates nigra commonly cited in regional floras.

Distribution and habitat: Lihtsamates is native to temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, including parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. It typically inhabits still or slow-moving waters such as ponds, marshes, and the edges of lakes where nutrient levels are moderate to elevated. It can form dense surface rafts that alter light penetration and gas exchange at the water surface.

Ecology and uses: The mats provide microhabitats for microorganisms and small invertebrates and can influence local nutrient cycling. Reproduction is primarily vegetative through fragmentation, with occasional sexual events producing dispersal propagules. In research contexts, Lihtsamates is studied for phytoremediation potential and as a bioindicator of eutrophication, though it has limited commercial use.
