Lihasvärinät, also known as fasciculations, are small, involuntary muscle twitches or contractions. They are often visible as fine tremors under the skin and can occur in any part of the body. While fasciculations can be harmless and are experienced by many healthy individuals, they can also be a symptom of an underlying neurological condition.

The cause of benign fasciculations is not always clear, but they can be triggered by factors such as stress, fatigue, caffeine consumption, and certain medications. These twitches are typically temporary and resolve on their own.

However, persistent or widespread fasciculations, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like muscle weakness, atrophy, or cramping, can indicate a more serious issue. These can include conditions affecting the motor neurons, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or spinal muscular atrophy. Other potential causes include nerve compression or irritation, electrolyte imbalances, or certain autoimmune diseases.

Diagnosis of fasciculations involves a medical history, physical examination, and often neurological tests like an electromyogram (EMG) to assess muscle and nerve function. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If the fasciculations are benign, no treatment is usually necessary. If they are a symptom of a medical condition, addressing the primary illness is the focus of treatment.
