Lihassäkeet, known scientifically as muscle fibers, are the fundamental cellular units of muscle tissue. These elongated, multinucleated cells are responsible for generating force and enabling movement in all multicellular animals. Lihassäkeet are specialized for contraction, a process driven by the interaction of actin and myosin filaments within their cytoplasm.

There are several types of lihassäkeet, broadly categorized into slow-twitch (Type I) and fast-twitch (Type II) fibers. Slow-twitch fibers are more resistant to fatigue and are primarily used for endurance activities, characterized by their high aerobic capacity and rich myoglobin content, which gives them a reddish appearance. Fast-twitch fibers, conversely, are capable of generating greater force and speed but fatigue more quickly. They are further subdivided into Type IIa and Type IIx fibers, with Type IIx being the fastest and most powerful but also the least fatigue-resistant.

The arrangement and proportion of these fiber types within a muscle can vary depending on its function and an individual's training. For instance, muscles used for sustained posture, like those in the back, tend to have a higher proportion of slow-twitch fibers, while muscles involved in explosive movements, such as those in the legs for sprinting, have more fast-twitch fibers. The ability of muscles to adapt and change in response to stimuli, including exercise, is a key aspect of muscle physiology.
