Lihansyöjäkasvit, also known as carnivorous plants, are a fascinating group of plants that have evolved to capture and digest small animals, primarily insects, to supplement their nutrient intake. This adaptation is most commonly found in environments where the soil is poor in essential nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. By obtaining these nutrients from prey, they can thrive in otherwise inhospitable conditions.

There are various trapping mechanisms employed by these plants. Pitfall traps are common, where leaves are modified into pitcher-like structures that contain digestive fluids. Insects are lured in by nectar or bright colors and then fall into the trap, unable to escape. Flypaper traps use sticky, glandular hairs on their leaves to ensnare insects that land on them. Snap traps, famously exemplified by the Venus flytrap, use rapidly closing leaves to trap prey. Finally, bladder traps, found in aquatic or wet soil environments, use a vacuum-like mechanism to suck in small aquatic organisms.

They play an important role in their ecosystems by controlling insect populations.
