Lightgenerating refers to the production of light by converting energy into photons. It encompasses a range of phenomena and devices that emit light in the visible spectrum or beyond, including ultraviolet and infrared sources. The term covers both natural and artificial light emission processes.

Categories of lightgeneration include incandescent, luminescent, electroluminescent, and plasma-based sources. Incandescence arises from thermal radiation when a material becomes hot. Luminescence encompasses fluorescence and phosphorescence, where light is emitted by a material after excitation; chemiluminescence and bioluminescence produce light through chemical reactions, with bioluminescence occurring in living organisms. Electroluminescence involves direct conversion of electrical energy into light, as in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic LEDs. Plasma-based sources generate light through electrical discharge in a gas, such as arc lamps and fluorescent lamps that use a phosphor layer to convert emitted radiation.

Key performance considerations include luminous efficacy (light output per unit electrical power), spectral characteristics, color temperature, color rendering, and device lifetime. Efficiency and color quality vary across technologies: incandescent sources are low-efficiency thermal emitters, while LEDs and fluorescent-discharge systems offer higher efficiency and longer lifetimes.

Applications span general and task lighting, displays and backlighting, signaling, and specialized instrumentation. Ongoing research aims to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and tailor emission spectra using materials such as advanced semiconductors, phosphors, quantum dots, and perovskites, as well as to enable flexible, transparent, and compact light-generating devices.
