Lievity is a neologism used in some discourse studies to describe the quality of communication that blends levity with sincerity to sustain audience engagement while conveying information. The concept treats humor and lightness as functional tools rather than mere stylistic flourishes.

The theoretical basis posits that lievity operates along a continuum. High lievity combines accessible language, playful framing, and clear relevance to the audience, while maintaining factual content. Low lievity favors formal register and minimal emotional cues, prioritizing rigor over approachability.

Components often cited include lexical tone, rhetorical devices (humor, anecdotes, analogies), pacing, and audience modeling. Some researchers view lievity as a strategic resource in domains where attention is limited or resistance is likely, such as science outreach or public policy.

Measurement remains debated. Proposals include humor density, perceived warmth, trust calibration, cognitive load, and information retention. Evaluations rely on experiments, surveys, and discourse analysis of real-world materials.

Criticism notes that lievity is culturally contingent and context-sensitive; what reads as appropriate humor in one setting may be inappropriate in another. Overemphasis can obscure important content or damage credibility if misapplied.
