Libur is a term used in Indonesian and Malay to denote holiday or vacation, referring to time off from work or school as well as official public holidays declared by authorities. In everyday usage it encompasses both personal breaks and nationally recognized days off.

In Indonesian grammar, libur is primarily a noun. The related verb forms are berlibur or mengambil libur, meaning to go on holiday or to take time off. The word is common in media, government announcements, and everyday conversation. In Malay, libur similarly denotes a holiday, though cuti is also widely used for leave or vacation in many contexts.

Types of libur can be grouped into two main categories. Public holidays or nasional are days declared by the government for national or cultural observances, which may be religious, historical, or civic in nature. School holidays, or libur sekolah, are scheduled breaks in the academic calendar. Individuals may also take personal leave or berlibur to travel or rest outside of these official dates, sometimes referred to as libur pribadi or cuti pribadi.

Observance of libur varies by country and culture but often has social and economic effects. Holidays can provide rest for workers, opportunities for family gatherings, and boosts for travel and tourism. Businesses may close or operate on limited hours, traffic patterns can shift, and schools close for specified periods. Common examples of widely observed holidays include religious and cultural festivities such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Christmas, New Year, Nyepi, Imlek, and Vesak, alongside regional or national commemorations.
