lexikografiskt

Lexikografiskt is a Swedish adjective and adverb meaning “in a lexicographic way” or “lexicographically.” It relates to lexicography, the study and practice of compiling dictionaries and organizing lexical data. The term is used to describe ordering, analysis, or presentation that follows dictionary order rather than other criteria.

Lexicographic order is defined by a fixed alphabet and a comparison rule: compare strings from left to right, at the first position where they differ choose the string with the smaller character; if one string is a prefix of the other, the shorter string is considered smaller. This way, “apple” comes before “apples,” and other languages may apply locale-specific rules for diacritics and special characters.

In practice, lexikografiskt sorting and analysis appear in linguistics, dictionary production, database indexing, and computer science. Examples include sorting a word list lexicographically, performing lexicographic comparisons in string-search algorithms, and describing the arrangement of entries in a lexicon.
