Levyepiteelikudos is a type of epithelial tissue found in the human body. It is characterized by its flat, scale-like cells that are arranged in one or more layers. This structure provides a smooth, protective surface and is well-suited for areas where friction is a concern or where absorption and secretion are important functions.

There are two main types of levyepiteelikudos: simple and stratified. Simple levyepiteelikudos consists of a single layer of flat cells. This type is found in areas where diffusion and filtration are important, such as in the alveoli of the lungs, the lining of blood vessels (endothelium), and the Bowman's capsule in the kidney. Its thinness allows for efficient exchange of substances.

Stratified levyepiteelikudos, on the other hand, is composed of multiple layers of flat cells. The cells on the surface are flat, while those in deeper layers may be more cuboidal or columnar. This multi-layered structure provides greater protection against abrasion and wear. The most prominent example of stratified levyepiteelikudos is the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. It also lines the mouth, esophagus, and vagina, where it serves a protective role against mechanical stress and pathogens. The outermost layers of stratified levyepiteelikudos are often keratinized, meaning they are filled with a tough, waterproof protein called keratin, further enhancing their protective capabilities.
