Leverskader refers to damage to the liver, a vital organ responsible for numerous essential functions including detoxification, protein synthesis, and the production of bile. This damage can arise from a variety of causes, broadly categorized into direct toxins, infections, metabolic disorders, and autoimmune conditions.

One of the most common causes of leverskader is alcohol abuse. Chronic heavy alcohol consumption can lead to alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis, a condition characterized by irreversible scarring of the liver tissue. Certain medications, such as acetaminophen (paracetamol) in overdose, can also cause severe liver injury. Viral hepatitis, particularly types B and C, are significant global causes of leverskader, often leading to chronic liver disease and an increased risk of liver cancer. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), increasingly prevalent in individuals with obesity and metabolic syndrome, can also progress to more severe forms of liver damage. Genetic disorders like hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease can also result in cumulative damage to the liver.

Symptoms of leverskader can vary widely depending on the severity and cause. Early stages may be asymptomatic, while later stages can manifest as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fatigue, abdominal pain, swelling in the legs and abdomen, and easy bruising. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to assess liver enzyme levels, imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scans, and sometimes a liver biopsy for definitive assessment. Treatment strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause, managing symptoms, and preventing further progression of the disease.
