Leshen, a term used in Slavic folklore for a forest spirit, is typically called leshy in Russian and other East Slavic languages. The name derives from the root for forest in Proto-Slavic, and cognates appear in Polish leśny and similar words in other languages. In traditional belief, the leshen is a guardian or powerful inhabitant of the woods, linked to trees, animals, and the health of the forest.

Described as a shapeshifter, the leshen may take human, animal, or tree-like forms. It is usually portrayed as a tall, humanoid figure with bark-like skin, leaves or moss, and antlers or a deer head. Its abilities include controlling animals, animating plants, and guiding or misleading travelers; it can strike silently and vanish into the forest.
