Lerakógáz, also known as landfill gas, is a complex mixture of gases produced by the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in landfills. The primary components of lerakógáz are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), typically making up about 50-60% and 35-45% of the mixture, respectively. It also contains smaller amounts of other gases, including nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The composition of lerakógáz varies depending on factors such as the type of waste, the age of the landfill, moisture content, and temperature. The decomposition process is carried out by a diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea, which break down complex organic materials into simpler compounds. This biogenic process is essentially the same as that occurring in other anaerobic environments, such as swamps and digesters.

Lerakógáz is a significant environmental concern due to its methane content. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change. Additionally, the presence of hydrogen sulfide can lead to odor problems and corrosion of infrastructure. However, lerakógáz also presents an opportunity for energy recovery. It can be captured and utilized as a renewable energy source, either through direct combustion for heat and electricity generation or by purifying it to produce biomethane, which can be injected into natural gas grids or used as a vehicle fuel. Landfill gas capture systems are increasingly being implemented worldwide to mitigate environmental impacts and harness its energy potential.
