Lepoaikavaatimuksille is a Finnish term referring to the set of rules that govern rest periods for employees. The concept encompasses minimum rest between working shifts, mandated breaks during work, and the weekly rest requirement. In many jurisdictions these requirements are derived from national labor laws, often aligning with or derived from the EU Working Time Directive, and are commonly implemented through national legislation, collective agreements, or employer policies. The core elements typically include a minimum daily rest (for example a continuous rest period between shifts), a minimum weekly rest (an entire day or two days free of work within a week), and breaks during the workday of a specified length. In addition, many systems allow averaging of rest periods over a reference period (for example over two weeks) under certain conditions, or prescribe compensatory rest for work outside normal hours.
