The concept is related to, but distinct from, semantic fields and word families. A semantic field covers a broad domain of meaning with related terms; a lexical set can be a narrower, curated collection used for study or corpus annotation. Lexical sets can be language-specific and may vary by culture or domain expertise. They are often employed as practical units for organizing vocabulary in textbooks, dictionaries, and language-learning curricula.

Applications of lexical sets span several areas. In language teaching, learners study lexical sets to build thematic vocabulary and improve retrieval and fluency within a domain. In lexicography and language resources, lexical sets organize dictionaries, thesauri, and frequency lists. In corpus linguistics, they enable researchers to measure usage patterns, semantic proximity, and diachronic change, as well as to annotate and compare texts across genres.

Examples illustrate the idea. A colors set might include red, blue, green, yellow, and black; a body-parts set might include head, arm, leg, and hand. Challenges include polysemy, where a word belongs to multiple domains, contextual shifts in meaning, and cross-linguistic variation that places items in different sets in different languages.
