Leiomüootse, also known as a uterine fibroid, is a non-cancerous growth that develops in the muscular wall of the uterus. These are very common, particularly in women of reproductive age, and their exact cause is not fully understood, though hormonal influences, genetics, and other growth factors are believed to play a role.

Fibroids can vary in size, number, and location. They can grow within the uterine wall (intramural), bulge outward from the uterine surface (subserosal), or project into the uterine cavity (submucosal). Many leiomyomas cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally during routine pelvic exams or imaging.

When symptoms do occur, they can include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and backache. In some cases, fibroids can interfere with pregnancy. Diagnosis typically involves a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or other imaging techniques like MRI.

Treatment options depend on the size, location, and number of fibroids, as well as the severity of symptoms and the patient's desire for future fertility. Options range from watchful waiting for asymptomatic fibroids to medications to manage bleeding and pain, minimally invasive procedures like myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids) or uterine artery embolization, and in severe cases, hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus).
