Ledningsmotstånd is a Swedish term that translates to "conduction resistance" or "line resistance" in English. It refers to the electrical resistance encountered by an electric current as it flows through a conductor, such as a wire or a cable. This resistance is an inherent property of the material from which the conductor is made and is also dependent on its physical dimensions.

The primary factors influencing ledningsmotstånd are the resistivity of the material, the length of the conductor, and its cross-sectional area. Higher resistivity materials exhibit greater resistance for the same dimensions. A longer conductor will have a higher ledningsmotstånd than a shorter one of the same material and thickness, as the electrons have to travel further and encounter more obstacles. Conversely, a larger cross-sectional area provides more pathways for the current to flow, thus reducing the resistance.

Ledningsmotstånd is a crucial consideration in electrical engineering and power transmission. Significant ledningsmotstånd can lead to energy loss in the form of heat (Joule heating), reducing the efficiency of electrical systems. In power lines, this resistance can cause voltage drops, meaning the voltage at the destination is lower than at the source. To minimize ledningsmotstånd, conductors are often made from materials with low resistivity, such as copper or aluminum, and are designed with sufficient cross-sectional area for the expected current. In some applications, like heating elements, ledningsmotstånd is intentionally designed to be high to generate heat.
