Lavapinda is a system of interconnected lava tubes on the eastern flank of Mount Kaia, a shield volcano on the island of Nativa in the Vulmara Archipelago. The cave complex comprises multiple passages and skylights and extends over roughly 12 kilometers. It formed during successive pahoehoe lava flows in the Late Pleistocene, when subterranean channels carried molten rock away from eruption vents before draining and crusting over.

Geology: The tubes feature smooth-walled galleries, lava shelves, and ropy textures. Some sections preserve skylights that allow daylight to penetrate deep into the cave. Mineral deposits include opalized silica and calcite crusts, with microcavities hosting microbial communities.

Biology: Lavapinda hosts cave-adapted invertebrates and chemotrophic microbial mats. Troglobitic insects and arachnids have been documented, often with reduced pigmentation. The ecosystem is considered fragile, and research emphasizes minimal disturbance and protection of water quality.

Access and research: Since the late 20th century it has attracted speleologists and scientists. Guided expeditions, mapping projects, and sampling have improved understanding of lava-tube formation and paleoclimate records. Access is restricted in sensitive areas to protect habitat and mineral deposits; local authorities regulate tourism and collecting.

Etymology: The name Lavapinda combines lava with pinda, a regional term meaning path or channel. The term has appeared in exploration reports and conservation plans and is now widely used in scientific and management contexts.
