The late twentieth century refers to roughly the period from the mid to late 1970s through 1999. It was shaped by rapid changes in politics, economics, technology, and culture, and by the global shift from a bipolar world to a more complex international system.

Politically, the era began with tensions of the late Cold War, but it ended with sweeping transformations across Europe and other regions. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 ended the Cold War, enabling waves of democratization in Eastern Europe and parts of Africa and Latin America.
