Lastvikt is the maximum permissible payload a vehicle can carry beyond its own weight. In Swedish terminology it is calculated as the difference between the vehicle’s total allowed weight (totalvikt) and its own weight (tjänstevikt). The formula is lastvikt = totalvikt − tjänstevikt. The payload includes passengers, cargo and any equipment that increases the loaded weight above the vehicle’s empty weight.

The payload cannot exceed lastvikt; the sum of the vehicle’s own weight and the payload must not exceed totalvikt. For example, a van with totalvikt 2700 kg and tjänstevikt 1500 kg has a lastvikt of 1200 kg. If the van is loaded with more than 1200 kg of cargo and passengers, it would exceed its prescribed weight limit and could be illegal or unsafe.

Payload affects performance and safety. Heavier loads increase braking distance, reduce acceleration, and can alter handling and stability if not distributed properly. Regulations often impose limits on gross weight and axle loads, and tires, suspension and braking systems must be rated for the expected payload. In trucks and trailers, how the weight is distributed across axles is also closely regulated to maintain road safety and proper vehicle dynamics.
