Laskujärjestelmä is a Finnish term that translates to "order of operations" in English. It is a set of rules that dictate the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. Without a standardized order of operations, different interpretations of the same mathematical expression could lead to different answers.

The commonly accepted order of operations is often remembered by mnemonics such as PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction) or BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction). In Finnish, the term "laskujärjestys" is also frequently used, carrying the same meaning.

The general principle is to perform operations within parentheses or brackets first. Following this, exponents or powers are calculated. Next, multiplication and division are carried out from left to right as they appear in the expression. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed, also from left to right. This systematic approach guarantees that all mathematicians arriving at a solution for the same problem will reach the same correct answer. Understanding and applying the laskujärjestelmä is fundamental to basic arithmetic and algebra.
