Common approaches include pigment transfer, where a laser irradiates a donor layer containing pigment to promote adhesion onto a receiving substrate; laser embossing or imprinting, in which a thermoplastic or resin layer is locally heated and pressed against a mold to imprint a pattern; laser ablation marking, which creates contrast by removing surface material; and laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT), where a thin film is driven onto a substrate to form a printed image. Variants may combine these methods to optimize resolution, adhesion, and texture.

Materials and applications vary with wavelength and coating compatibility. Laserpainaminen is used on plastics, papers, textiles, films, and metals with suitable coatings, and finds applications in packaging, electronics labeling, decorative arts, product authentication, and microfabrication. It enables high-resolution, digitally controlled patterns and can produce permanent or semi-permanent marks without contact between tools and the substrate.
