A larder is a cool, dry room or cupboard used for storing food. Historically, larders were an essential feature of many homes, particularly before the advent of refrigeration. Their primary function was to keep perishable items fresh for longer periods.

The design of a larder typically aimed to maintain a low temperature and good ventilation. This was often achieved through thick stone walls, small or absent windows, and sometimes vents covered with mesh to prevent insects. Some larders had shelves made of slate or stone, which helped to retain coolness. Many also included hooks for hanging meats or game.

The contents of a larder varied depending on the season and the household's resources. Common items included cured meats, cheeses, root vegetables like potatoes and carrots, preserved fruits and jams, and baked goods. Dairy products such as butter and milk might also be stored there, often placed on the coolest shelf or in a stone sink if available.

In modern homes, the traditional larder has largely been replaced by refrigerators and freezers. However, the concept persists in the form of dedicated pantry cupboards or walk-in pantries, which serve a similar purpose for non-perishable goods and sometimes for storing items that benefit from cooler, darker conditions than the main kitchen. The term "larder" is sometimes used more broadly to refer to any collection of food supplies.
