Lanthanide-containing is a broad descriptor used in chemistry and materials science to denote substances that include one or more lanthanide elements in their composition. The lanthanides are the elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71 and are typically characterized by a common oxidation state of +3, though cerium and europium can access other states in certain compounds. In solid materials they appear in oxides, fluorides, phosphates, silicates, garnets, and various organometallic complexes. The 4f electrons are shielded by outer shells, leading to gradual chemical trends across the series, sharp optical transitions, and often large magnetic moments.

Lanthanide-containing materials are central to many technologies. Doped phosphors such as europium- and cerium-doped oxides enable white light generation in LEDs (for example, Y3Al5O12:Ce). Scintillators based on lanthanide hosts (e.g., Lu2SiO5:Ce, Gd2SiO5:Ce) are used in medical imaging and radiation detection. In magnets, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) systems rely on lanthanides for high energy density. Lanthanides also play a role in catalysts for hydrocarbon processing and in solid-state laser and fiber laser materials (Er, Yb, Ho-doped hosts). Gadolinium complexes are used as MRI contrast agents, illustrating biomedical applications.

Production and separation of lanthanides pose challenges due to their chemical similarity. They are commonly extracted from minerals such as bastnäsite and monazite, with separation often achieved by solvent extraction and ion-exchange techniques. As demand grows for electronics, lighting, and renewable technologies, efficient recovery, recycling, and sustainable sourcing of lanthanide-containing materials remain important considerations.
