Lankavärjäystä is a Finnish term referring to the dyeing of yarn, a fundamental process in textile production and traditional crafts. It involves immersing yarn, typically made from wool, cotton, linen, or silk, into a dye bath to impart color. This process can be done using natural dyes, derived from plants, minerals, or insects, or synthetic dyes, which offer a wider range of hues and greater colorfastness.

The preparation of the yarn is crucial before dyeing. It often involves scouring to remove impurities like grease and dirt, followed by mordanting, especially when using natural dyes. Mordants are substances that help the dye adhere to the fiber, improving color intensity and wash fastness. Common mordants include alum, iron, and copper.

Once prepared, the yarn is submerged in a heated dye bath. The temperature and duration of dyeing depend on the type of dye and fiber used, as well as the desired shade. After dyeing, the yarn is rinsed thoroughly to remove excess dye and then dried.
