Language typology is a field of linguistics that studies and classifies languages based on their structural properties. Other typological features include the presence or absence of grammatical gender, the way negation is expressed, and the system of verb tenses and aspects.

Language typology aims to move beyond simply describing individual languages and instead seeks to build a comprehensive map of possible linguistic structures and their distributions. This involves analyzing large datasets of languages, often through comparative methods. The findings of typology can inform theories of language acquisition, language change, and the cognitive basis of language. It helps to understand the constraints and possibilities inherent in human language.
