landstyrkerne

Landstyrkerne are the land-based branch of the Danish Armed Forces, responsible for the defense of Denmark and for contributing to international security through expeditionary and peacekeeping operations. As the ground component, they operate in conjunction with the Navy and Air Force and work within NATO and United Nations frameworks to deliver combined arms capabilities on land.

Historically, the landstyrkerne trace their lineage to medieval Danish forces and were reorganized in the 19th and 20th centuries. During the Cold War they were aligned with NATO deterrence, and after the Cold War they underwent reforms to become a more flexible, expeditionary force capable of rapid deployment and multinational operations.

Organization and training: The landstyrkerne are organized into brigades and battalions, with units of infantry, armor, reconnaissance, artillery, engineers, and logistics, supported by signals and medical services. Training emphasizes interoperability with allied forces, combined arms operations, and professionalization, conducted at national bases and through international exercises.

Role and deployments: Beyond territorial defense, Landstyrkerne contribute to NATO and UN missions, including stabilization, peacekeeping, and training missions. Danish land forces have participated in Afghanistan (ISAF) and other multinational operations.

Current status: The Landstyrkerne continue modernization and reform to maintain readiness for both national defense and expeditionary deployments in line with Denmark's defense strategy and NATO obligations.
