The term landstingsråd, which translates to "county council" or "regional council" in English, refers to an administrative body in certain Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden. Historically, these councils were responsible for the provision of public services at a regional level, primarily focusing on healthcare. They operated under the principle of decentralization, where specific governmental functions were delegated to local or regional authorities rather than being solely managed by the central government.

The role and structure of landstingsråd have evolved over time. In Sweden, these bodies were replaced by landsting in 1971, which then themselves transitioned into regioner in 2019. This change aimed to broaden the scope of responsibilities beyond healthcare to include regional development, public transport, and cultural initiatives. Despite the name change, the core function of managing and delivering regional public services, especially healthcare, has largely continued.

The landstingsråd, or its successor bodies, are typically funded through a combination of national government grants and local taxation. They are democratically elected assemblies, with representatives chosen by the citizens within the respective region. These elected officials make decisions regarding budgets, service planning, and the overall direction of regional development.
