Operations are coordinated by air traffic control and ground handling teams to manage sequencing, safety, and efficiency. Types: Airports and air bases typically include one or more runways and passenger terminals, cargo facilities, and maintenance depots. Heliports focus on rotorcraft operations with safe approach paths and arrestor or parking areas. Vertiports are designed for vertical take-off and landing vehicles, including drones and future urban air mobility. Some landingsbases are mixed-use or spaceport-adjacent, accommodating rocket landings or ground support for space missions.

Planning considerations: Site selection weighs geography, prevailing winds, noise, accessibility, and proximity to population centers. Capacity planning assesses traffic demand, runway configuration, instrument approaches, and resilience against weather and security incidents. Environmental impact and sustainability are increasingly integrated into design and operation.
