Lamplight is the illumination produced by a lamp, a device that emits visible light by transforming energy into photons. Lamps come in various forms, from simple oil or gas lamps to electric lamps that rely on electrical power to excite a light source. The term lamplight is often used to refer to the glow or lighting produced by such devices in a given space.

Historically, oil lamps burned vegetable or animal oil with a wick, delivering a warm, flickering light. In the 19th century gas lamps provided brighter public lighting. The development of electric lighting in the late 19th century, notably incandescent bulbs, marked a turning point. Subsequent advances introduced fluorescent lamps, halogen bulbs, and, more recently, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which now dominate many applications.

Light from a lamp is characterized by luminous flux, luminous efficacy, color temperature, and color rendering. Luminous flux, measured in lumens, indicates perceived brightness. Efficacy, in lumens per watt, reflects energy efficiency. Color temperature, measured in kelvin, ranges from warm (2700–3000 K) to cool (4000–6500 K). LEDs offer high efficiency and long life compared to traditional bulbs.

Lamplight is used in homes, workplaces, streets, and portable devices. Selection considerations include energy efficiency, light quality, dimming capability, and fixture design. Environmental concerns center on energy use, materials, and end-of-life disposal, with LEDs and compact fluorescent lamps recycling and incandescent waste management guiding choices.
